Resale Value: Which Menswear Pieces Hold Their Price in Dhaka
Category-by-category depreciation data for the Bangladeshi secondhand market — what holds value, what collapses, and when to sell.

Every piece of clothing you own is an asset that depreciates. Most men never find out at what rate, because they never sell anything. If you do sell — and increasingly, Bangladeshi men do — the depreciation curve is sharply different by category, and it's worth knowing before you buy.
The categories that hold value
- Leather footwear — 45–55% of retail retained at two years if resoled and conditioned.
- Wool overcoats and technical outerwear — 40–55%, and higher in November–December.
- Raw denim with visible fade — sometimes above retail for sought-after runs; fade is a feature here.
- Mechanical watches and leather goods — the only genuinely appreciating category in a Bangladeshi man's wardrobe.
The categories that collapse
- Fast-fashion knits and printed tees — under 15% within a year.
- Heavy embroidered festive sets — highly seasonal and highly identifiable; buyers remember what was worn in last year's photos.
- Anything with a dated logo treatment. Logo cycles in Dhaka run about eighteen months.
Seasonality is the biggest lever
The Bangladeshi resale calendar is predictable: panjabi and festive demand spikes in the four weeks before Eid, winter outerwear peaks late November, and January is the worst month to list almost anything. Listing an overcoat in March instead of November costs you roughly a third of the price.
How to list so it actually sells
Photograph flat on a neutral surface in daylight, shoot the flaws deliberately rather than hiding them, and state measurements in centimetres instead of relying on size labels. Structured platforms enforce most of this — listing on a resale platform with condition grading tends to clear items faster than a Facebook group post, because buyers can filter by condition and size instead of scrolling a feed.
When to sell
Sell at the first season you skip the piece entirely — not the third. Condition, not sentiment, is what the market pays for, and a garment sitting unworn in a Dhaka wardrobe through a monsoon is a garment losing value to humidity.
What this means for how you buy
Buy in the categories with shallow depreciation curves and you effectively rent good clothing for the difference. Buy heavily in the collapse categories and every purchase is a write-off. That's the whole argument for spending more on fewer, better pieces — it isn't taste, it's arithmetic.
